I Have a Problem

I have a problem. I have a crate problem and they say that the first step is admitting it, so here I am admitting it. I have six dogs and 21 crates. Yes, that is two-one crates. 21. My Stepmom accused me of being a hoarder the other day when Moon came to stay permanently. I was pretty offended and off put by this (and declined Easter at their house) but while I'm certainly no dog hoarder I might just be a crate hoarder.

In my defense part of the problem is that when I started with the dogs I liked the wire crates. Somewhere along the line I realized that my dogs prefer plastic crates, and started the transition while not exactly getting rid of the wire crates. Ok, not getting rid of them at all. <insert singsong voice here> I've got crates in the van, crates in the living room, crates in the office, crates in the bedroom, crates in the dog room... and even crates at a friend's house. I've sold a few crates along the way, and even gave one to my ex-husband to go with my ex-bordercolliemixdogBree. But it's sort of like sitting there staring at a candy machine. I know I don't need it but I WANT it. Oh yes, I realize I sound like I'm about five years old.

Anyway, here's why this is an urgent problem at this exact moment - I just got an email from dog.com and guess what? They have free shipping on selected dog crates for a limited time. I am seriously jonesing here. Some women collect shoes. I collect crates. Here's the thing: I have a new dog. Doesn't she deserve her very own new plastic crate? Not only that, but it's exceptionally useful to have many crates for when other dogs come over to stay - and for when other dogs come ride in the StinkMobile.

Maybe if I went to Pet Supplies Plus and just smelled the dog crates it would help. I could just open and close their little doors and maybe arrange and rearrange them in the store. That would be ALMOST like having a new one myself, without the cost. So what if one of my dogs got in there? They'd never notice (the people who work there).

In some ways my crate problem is a little bit like my book problem. I just... love them and need them. Besides. FREE SHIPPING!!! Who can say no to free shipping? I'm going to try to talk myself out of it, because really the money could be better spent on Advantix and Glyco-Flex III. But man. Free shipping on crates.

I too collect crates. I started with plastic ones and now like black wire crates. I have to keep the plastic ones for shipping. I am constantly looking on Craigslist for wire crates. I scored a 300 size wire crate (basically brand new) for $30 last weekend.
I feel your pain.

I collect crate pads, crates, and leashes. It is an illness....You are not alone in your addiction.

Oh MAN!!! That's a good deal. I've had to ban myself from Craigslist because then I'd have 200 crates. Seriously!

The best find I ever made was someone had dumped an XL plastic crate (looks to be a kennel-aire) in the Un-Park down the street. It was minus a door and the connecting pieces. I bought a door and the latches for like... $12, disinfected it with bleach, and it's an AWESOME crate.

By the way... thank you both. It's nice to feel like I'm not alone. lol

You are totally not alone. Before I moved I had 5 dogs and about 16 crates. My sister MADE ME give some away and also take on TO THE DUMP. To the dump - a perfectly good crate. Well, it was really grungy and lived outside on my deck but it served a purpose. The other day I spent 30 minutes looking for one particular crate before I realized that the one I was looking for was one that she made me give away. I needed it. It had a purpose. So I ordered one just like it but better on ebay. Ha!

Hmmm, i have 26 crates and 5 dogs...., no wait, 27. Oh wait, and 2 soft crates. Seriously, if i sit here and think about it a few minutes, i'll hit 30. And a new one came today! Oh crap, that IS 30.

To be fair, 1 set of 5 in the house, 4 in the pickup, 5 in the van, 3 in the barn, 3 puppy crates. Add a few extras here and there, and it adds up!

I think i win with 6 times as many crates as i have dogs though...LOL!

there is no such thing as too many crates. I have at least 16 or more and only 6 dogs. Of course I do run a groom shop :) I had a customer ask if I'd trade grooming her dog for a crate. I felt like I'd hit the jackpot! Next thing I'm collecting is kennels. I only have 2 right now.

Dear friends: I caved. Make that 22 crates. That is all.

You are SO not alone. I have 5 dogs and 15 crates. Plus an eight-hole topper on my truck so none of those 15 are for a vehicle. Two of the 5 do not sleep in crates. A N D one of my dogs is never crated! One can never have too many crates.

wait I have more dogs than crates...which requires me to move crates ALL THE TIME. Especially since I on occasion use dog crates to transport chickens....anyone want to sell me a crate?!?!?!?

I only own 4 crates (and have 2 dogs), but I can relate. I have compensated and appeased my spouse by loaning out a couple of my crates (more or less, on a permanent basis) to various foster homes with Western Border Collie Rescue, but they are MINE if I need them. If you have the space, don't worry about it -- if you don't, or even if you do, loan them to a local dog rescue and they'll thank you.

Regards,

Deb
